Upon the death of MDPPA President, the late Ron Coss, the MDPPA Board of Directors sought to establish an award that honors the memory of Ron Coss. With that goal in mind the Maryland Professional Photographers Association, (MDPPA), created the MDPPA Ron Coss Board of Directors Award. Ron dearly loved the organization. He spent much of his exhaustive energy looking for activities that promoted membership in the organization and/or promoted the professional development of the members of the organization. Some of these activities included the Annual MDPPA Picnic, which for several years, Ron and his wife, Christine, sponsored at their home in Hagerstown, MD; ARTSCAPE in Baltimore, MD, an event that drew thousands of people; and the annual MemberFest, where a nationally renowned photographer gives an all-day training seminar for MDPPA members and prospective members. The intent of the MDPPA Ron Coss Board of Directors Award is to recognize individuals, who through outstanding service, have contributed to or provided for activities that improved membership and/or the professional development of MDPPA members. Doris Armstrong, formerly of Kodak, exemplifies that model. As Kodak changed its business model, Kodak began reducing sponsorship funds that had been previously available for organizations such as Maryland Professional Photographers Association. Ms. Armstrong, as best as possible, and for as long as possible, made sponsorship dollars available to MDPPA, even when sponsorship funds were eliminated for other small state associations such as ours, and even after her superiors had advised her to not consider organizations as small as ours. MDPPA relies heavily on sponsorship dollars to help fund our annual convention, an activity which, you can certainly appreciate, helps improve the professional development of MDPPA members. At its 2008 Convention and Awards Banquet on 27 January 2008, MDPPA Chairman of the Board of Directors, George Singleton presented to Doris Armstrong (in absentia) the 2008 MDPPA Ron Coss Board of Directors Award.

The ASP State Elite Award is to be presented to the ASP member in good standing of the highest scoring image at his or her state convention. This means that he or she is a member in good standing in the PPA, as per ASP By Laws, and that he or she must be current with their ASP dues PRIOR to the event. In the event of a tie, total case score will be the first tie breaker. In the unlikely event that a tie still exists, the second highest image in their case will break the tie. In the really unlikely event that a tie still exists, the third highest image in their case will break the tie. If there is still a tie at this point, it must be an omen, and ASP will declare co-winners of the award and provide another trophy. Both recipients should be duly recognized at the awards ceremony for their accomplishments. An ASP member is eligible for the State Elite Award only in the state in which they reside or list as their primary affiliation. Good Evening. I am John Stein, your State Representative for the American Society of Photographers. The goal of the ASP is to “Promote education. Foster fellowship, and perpetuate the idea of photography as a science and an art.” The ASP State Elite Award goes to the maker of the highest scoring image by an ASP member at their State Competition. It is given in honor of William Miller, Master of Photography, Photographic Craftsman, ASP Fellow. In 1939 , Bill founded what is known today as Miller’s Professional Imaging. He dedicated his life to helping others refine their craft. And, it is in that spirit, I proudly present the ASP State Elite Award to:
Congratulations.
