Congratulations to all of our members who entered the 2008 MDPPA Annual Print Competition. Whether or not you won a trophy, you are still a winner because just by entering you are improving your skills and learning how to better your work as a professional photographer!

Now is the time to start getting your prints ready for the next competition in March! The best way to really understand print competition is to get involved…so volunteer to help at one of the next competitions.

Southeastern Professional Photographers Association (SEPPA) will be holding the regional print competitions in March. Check the information that has been posted for all the details to enter. If you are a member of MDPPA, you are automatically a member of our SEPPA region. So send your prints from our Annual Competition on to the SEPPA judging to see how they do on a regional level. Remember, prints that Merit at the regional level are automatically merited when sent on to the national PPA Print Competition this summer.

Ron Coss Memorial Award:
(Presented by Chairman of the Board, George Singleton)
Ron was a Past President of MDPPA. He has been described by many as a motivating force, a get the job done, no excuses kind of person. It is in his memory that this award is given.

Upon the death of MDPPA President, the late Ron Coss, the MDPPA Board of Directors sought to establish an award that honors the memory of Ron Coss. With that goal in mind the Maryland Professional Photographers Association, (MDPPA), created the MDPPA Ron Coss Board of Directors Award.

Ron dearly loved the organization. He spent much of his exhaustive energy looking for activities that promoted membership in the organization and/or promoted the professional development of the members of the organization. Some of these activities included the Annual MDPPA Picnic, which for several years, Ron and his wife, Christine, sponsored at their home in Hagerstown, MD; ARTSCAPE in Baltimore, MD, an event that drew thousands of people; and the annual MemberFest, where a nationally renowned photographer gives an all-day training seminar for MDPPA members and prospective members.

The intent of the MDPPA Ron Coss Board of Directors Award is to recognize individuals, who through outstanding service, have contributed to or provided for activities that improved membership and/or the professional development of MDPPA members. Doris Armstrong, formerly of Kodak, exemplifies that model.

As Kodak changed its business model, Kodak began reducing sponsorship funds that had been previously available for organizations such as Maryland Professional Photographers Association. Ms. Armstrong, as best as possible, and for as long as possible, made sponsorship dollars available to MDPPA, even when sponsorship funds were eliminated for other small state associations such as ours, and even after her superiors had advised her to not consider organizations as small as ours. MDPPA relies heavily on sponsorship dollars to help fund our annual convention, an activity which, you can certainly appreciate, helps improve the professional development of MDPPA members.

At its 2008 Convention and Awards Banquet on 27 January 2008, MDPPA Chairman of the Board of Directors, George Singleton presented to Doris Armstrong (in absentia) the 2008 MDPPA Ron Coss Board of Directors Award.

ASP Elite Award ( Will be presented by John Stein – who is our MDPPA liaison to the American Society of Photographers.)

The ASP State Elite Award is to be presented to the ASP member in good standing of the highest scoring image at his or her state convention. This means that he or she is a member in good standing in the PPA, as per ASP By Laws, and that he or she must be current with their ASP dues PRIOR to the event.

In the event of a tie, total case score will be the first tie breaker.

In the unlikely event that a tie still exists, the second highest image in their case will break the tie.

In the really unlikely event that a tie still exists, the third highest image in their case will break the tie.

If there is still a tie at this point, it must be an omen, and ASP will declare co-winners of the award and provide another trophy. Both recipients should be duly recognized at the awards ceremony for their accomplishments.

An ASP member is eligible for the State Elite Award only in the state in which they reside or list as their primary affiliation.

Good Evening.

I am John Stein, your State Representative for the American Society of Photographers.

The goal of the ASP is to “Promote education. Foster fellowship, and perpetuate the idea of photography as a science and an art.”

The ASP State Elite Award goes to the maker of the highest scoring image by an ASP member at their State Competition.

It is given in honor of William Miller, Master of Photography, Photographic Craftsman, ASP Fellow.

In 1939 , Bill founded what is known today as Miller’s Professional Imaging.

He dedicated his life to helping others refine their craft.

And, it is in that spirit, I proudly present the ASP State Elite Award to:

Kodak introduced the Gallery Awards in 1985 as a way to honor and promote the importance and value of excellence in professional photography.
Kodak is proud to continue in it’s desire to elevate the importance of professional, quality imaging within the industry, as well as with customers. Kodak has always represented quality imaging through their many products and services, and it’s a connection they are pleased to make.
The Gallery Awards are judged on a state or regional basis, with winners going on to compete at the national level for a Gallery Elite Award.
Kodak judges 100’s of Gallery Award winners each year and then honors the “best of the best” with the Gallery Elite Award competition. This competition is one more way Kodak can showcase outstanding, high-quality photographic images and to continue elevating the art of professional photographers, as well as thanking them, their associates, and their clients, who have helped make the Gallery Elite Award a symbol of photographic excellence.
This year at the National Convention in Tampa, Flying Solo, by Joe Campanellie was selected as one of the Gallery Elite Award winners. This is Joe’s second Gallery Elite Award which makes him a member of only three photographers nationally to have accomplished this.
If you are chosen as a KODAK Gallery Award winner, you are automatically eligible to compete for the prestigious Gallery Elite Award nationally.

SEPPA Award:

This award is presented to an individual for providing outstanding service to the State Association, and if possible, SEPPA. The prestigiousness of this award is second only to the National Award.

Steve Clark

National Award:
This is the most prestigious award that can be presented by MDPPA. It is presented to an individual for OUTSTANDING service to professional photography or to the state association. This award is provided by PP of A and has the recipients name and presentation date engraved on it.

National Award Congratulatory Speech

Volunteers truly are the lifeblood of PPA and it’s Affiliates. Every association has those extraordinary volunteers whose efforts on behalf of the Affiliate and its members deserve special recognition.

Seeking a way to thank these individuals, PPA created the National Award in 1958. Each year, PPA makes this prestigious award available to state, regional, national and international affiliates, who then present it to deserving individuals. The highest honor granted by a PPA Affiliate, it recognizes those whose support for photography goes far beyond any regular expectations or contributions.

The simple inscription on this plaque reads “for service to professional
photography”. But, we know that this award means far more than that. We are here to honor one of those special individuals today. PPA is pleased to share with the Maryland Professional Photographers Association in the presentation of the coveted National Award.

On behalf of the Professional Photographers of America, I am pleased to extend my gratitude and congratulations to this year’s recipient.

Would all those who have received the National Award please come forward to congratulate this year’s recipient?

Ladies and Gentleman please join me in congratulating this year’s recipient…

George Singleton
